Someone sent me an e-mail with a boat load of job listings on it, so I thought I'd share. I do not know anybody personally suffering from this economic down-turn, but there certainly are many news stories about it.

I pray that everyone remains positive and focused on realizing your potential, whether anyone else is compensating you for that or not. I truly believe and have been living in the protective sphere of the universe. There have been times I didn't know if my part-time salary as a college instructor would cover my mortgage. After three years, I've never been unable to write the check. I have always been able to provide for myself and my son, even when I did not see how it was going to happen at the end of the month. I am a true believer that as long as you share your gifts, skills, and talents the creative force of the universe--God--will provide for you.

I know it because I have lived it. Every day I wake up, I no longer worry about how I will be able to pay the bills this month. I focus on how I will be able to help and serve the people around me with the skills, talents and gifts I have been blessed with. The more I focus on that, the more financial resources come my way. The more financial resources come my way, the more I share that with others. Be blessed.

NOTE: Unless specific permission is given within the listing, DO NOT CALL about positions or to follow up.

EXECUTIVE & MANAGEMENT POSITIONS

Established sports & entertainment marketing agency seeks a Senior Account Executive to manage entertainment focused programs between corporate client(s) and entertainment properties (studios, networks, labels). You are taking the class because you want to or you were told you have to take it to get what you want, so make sure you give the course the needed time and attention in order to successfully complete.

Ask Questions
Nobody likes looking foolish in front of the class, right? Would you rather look foolish (even though you really are being brave), or would you rather remain confused?
The classroom is a learning environment where you are allowed to make mistakes and most of all ask questions.
The student who asks questions is really doing the class a favor because usually someone else has the same question, but just isn’t brave enough.

Communicate with Instructor
Your ability to communicate with your instructor is vital
You should never take a class and not talk to the instructor during his/her office hours
Some students drop a class when they feel overwhelmed or if they don’t like an instructor, when it could actually be avoided by communicating with the instructor

Use Student Services
When you pay tuition, you pay for access to all that the campus has to offer
Take advantage of the services like the library, learning center, free tutoring, computer lab, counseling, health services, etc.
Some of the services offered can also help if you get discouraged and want to drop a class or drop out of school

Take Responsibility for your actions
It’s so easy to blame others for the difficulties we experience in our lives, try to make it a habit to examine what you contribute to a situation
Your thoughts and behavior become real—if you say to yourself, “This is going to be hard.” It will in fact be difficult. But if you tell yourself that this is a challenge that you are going to give your best, then your best will follow.

Keep your goals within focus
No matter what happens in your life—because life continues to happen, never give up on your goals.
Let no one take you off course
Eliminate negative thoughts, negative people, and any other negative influences from your sphere in order to reach your goals

For older students
Be proud of yourself for having the courage and consciousness to educate yourselves
Take your time, just because you started later does not mean you have to rush to catch up—savor the experience
Whether you have an instructor half your age or twice your age, there is something to be learned from everyone—let your wisdom guide you
Try to find ways of incorporating the wealth of knowledge and experience you have acquired over the years in your academic pursuits—this way others may benefit from your wisdom
Rebuke shame—it has no place in what you are trying to accomplish
Look at your coming back to school as returning to your youth but smarter
Have fun!!! Meet the challenges head on!!! Love to grow!!!

For young students
Study abroad or at least in another state for a year at least
Know that the contacts you make can be vital to your professional success
Get as much free money as you can: scholarships, grants, etc.
Get as much experience as you can through internships, volunteering, etc.
Try not to get burdened with debt i.e. new cars, credit cards, designer clothes, loans—be free as long as you can because once the debt accrues, you have to focus on paying it
Travel as much as you can, not just to party but to see the world you live in
If you have no children or spouses, make school your major priority—older students will tell you once you turn your focus on other things, it’s virtually impossible to get it back to school. If you do make it back, there is never enough time to study and fully focus on school the way you might like to.

Fall 2002

Money for College

In this economic climate we are faced with the challenge of balancing survival with achieving our dreams. It is possible to achieve your dreams without owing your first born upon receipt of your B.A.

I have a friend--I hope she isn't infuriated if she ever reads this--who admitted to owing $150,000 in student loans. I often use her choices and my choices to illustrate the options we all have to fund our dreams for college.

My friend went to ivy league schools and private colleges as opposed to my choice of state schools: same major, same terminal degree, worked in the same places.

Five years out of graduate school, I had more liquid assets than I had debt. Actually, I could have written a check to pay off my student loans; instead, I chose to purchase a townhouse which is another story altogether. My friend on the other hand with family, children, debt, and a hectic working schedule was achieving her version of the American Dream at a more stressful level than I care for.

Granted, her ivy league credentials have gotten her into realy great positions, but at what cost? For me, the cost of owing more than I could ever possess is just another form of enslavement. You decide for yourself if the price is worth it. You know what you are worth.

If you want to live and work as opposed to merely working to live please plan and plan well. Prosperity doesn't just happen, you make it so through your actions and intentions.

Gates Foundation Scholarships
Coca-cola Scholarships
Other Resources

Our Children Deserve More

There was a time when education was valued among African Americans. As a matter of fact, it was so valued that one of the professions most saught after and revered was teaching. As Africans were released from forced labor in America's South, it was imperative that they learned to communicate and function within this society they found themselves stranded in. There is a perception propogated in mainstream culture that African Americans have gone from the pursuit of education to an utter disregard and disrespect for knowledge.

School adminstrators and law makers support their prejudices by institutionalizing their racist perception by disciplining African American students more severely than other children. In the article, "Breaking the School-to-Prison Pipeline," African American students are disporpotionately affected by the policies and practices that support their suspension and expulsion at a rate of three times the rate of white students.

As an educator, I am increasingly alarmed at the propensity for young people to embrace a culture of rebellion--of the self-destructive variety. It is no surprise that they reject standard English because it is "white" and devoid of the cadence and creativity that colors their vernacular. I hardly blame African American youth for smirking and slouching in their seats as the teacher tells them the lies so prevelent in the history books.

The young people should not be left to teach themselves. The school system, as it is, certainly is not going to give them any knowledge of self or understanding. It is up to the community of African Americans--whoever is functioning on a conscious level--to share the knowledge of ancestors that survived the maafa, shirked the yolk of physical and mental oppression, and gave the world a true understanding of what it is to be humane.

People like Frederick Douglass are examples of what we can do with nothing, but most young people never really think about what he did or was able to accomplish--for you hard core revolutionaries, I'm not so concerned about his marriage to a white woman as much as I am astounded that he could teach himself to read. Fannie Lou Hammer is a woman I adore. She was pure determination with a willingness to lay down her life for what she believed. I don't know anybody in my immediate circle who possesses those attributes. There are so many other well read, well spoken and generally good people among African Americans who our young people should look up to.

The children have been left in the care of strangers and institutions. Those strangers have shown themselves incapable of giving our children what they need--love, respect, compassion, affirmation. The strangers prefer to take our children and throw them into the prison complex where they are once again enslaved.

Our greatest natural resource are our minds. We cannot sit idly by while our children and their minds go down the school-to-prison sewer.

Your Baggage is Going to Cost You

There was a time when you could travel and go about life with all of the baggage you wanted. People would simply tolerate your bulk. In the Aquarian Age, there is no room for your baggage, your bulk, or your clutter. People will not entertain the chips on your shoulders nor the negative tapes in your mind. It is nothing personal. The fact is that EVERYONE has issues and baggage to manage. It is selfish to walk into any room or situation and expect for your issues to take precedence over anyone else’s.

I never expected anyone to go out of their way to understand my problems, but I did not consider how the feelings brewing beneath my emotionless exterior affected other people. Years ago I began working on myself: psychological counseling, yoga, meditation, body work, prayer, exercise, diet, etc. There still remains room for growth, but I have a better handle on me. I know why I react to situations, and I know how to control what I do and what I say.

My journey has also led me to the understanding that even at my most positive, I can be perceived as negative. For a while it bewildered and frustrated me. Once I arrived at the place in myself that was grounded and sure of my being, I was able to see that there are people who are carrying baggage which hinders them from seeing clearly. Sometimes they cannot see what is going on or the good things that are happening to them because they are holding on to a memory-bag full of unpleasant experiences.

I have given genuine complements that were taken as insults and extended assistance that was taken as patronizing. When we hold love in our hearts, love is what we get. When we hold dislike or distrust in our hearts, that is all we see and experience. I know this, have lived with this and speak the truth of my experience.

I cannot control others, and there are plenty of situations that are beyond my level of coping, but I have authority over myself. Whatever I do I own and take responsibility for.

We all have things we carry around, but let’s not allow those things to get in the way of our appreciating each other and seeing what is really important. Besides, we can’t afford to carry our baggage anymore—it costs too much. Just look at the airlines.

You Are the Source

You are the world's greatest natural resource. No matter how dumb, ugly, fat, or useless you think you are, the corporations and despots need you like fish need water. You make the big wheel keep turning. Your belief in this system, or inability to imagine another way of living, enable things to remain just as they are.

More than gold, platinum or oil, you—your mind and energy—are the world's greatest resource. The people who control +95% of the world's natural resources will not be able to do what they do without you and the value you assign to the things or ideas you buy into.

All of the distractions at our disposal are robbing us of investing in ourselves, that is if we allow them to: television (HD & cable), video games, text messaging, internet (Myspace, YouTube, porn, e-mail), shopping, partying. Any time we give to someone else's dreams is taking us away from realizing our own. Hopefully, as you read this you become empowered and inspired; your reading this will take you closer to realizing your goals or dreams. Anything you invest your time and energy in should serve you, and those things that suck time out of you and leave you with nothing should be set aside and rejected like a kiss from someone with onions and garlic breath.

A group called the Watts Prophets recorded a poem in which the refrain was "keepin you doin thangs." That is exactly what happens on a daily basis; we are repeatedly sucked into artificial situations that seem urgent and that seem important, but when someone dies or a natural disaster unplugs us we realize how choreographed our lives are—and not by our own design.

My personal experience with this knowledge is an ongoing struggle. I can always find a distraction, but it is not so easy finding time to do the things that take me closer to realizing my goals. Writing this, sharing this with you is taking me closer to manifesting my purpose.

What is it that you have wanted to do and have been compelled toward, but never allowed yourself the time to do? We are our only obstacles. We choose to invest our thoughts and energy into people, ideas, organizations, events and self-destructive actions that take us away from our purpose. What will you choose to do when you finish reading this? What steps are you taking to become the person you want to be?

Black and Mexican conflict in Compton and Los Angeles

All that history and all that work that the Black Panthers and Brown Berets put in was for nothing?

I lived in Compton '77-'87. Bilingual education meant Latino and Black children being taught English and Spanish in the same classroom. As a matter of fact, there was no "Latino" or "Hispanic". It was all about Chicano pride.

There was respect and knowledge of who and what the real enemy was. As far as resources, I saw my parents and the other adults on the block share what they had and look out for each other--Chicano, Black, Belizean, and Samoan.

This new wave of hate disgusts me. The willing ignorance of this generation of gangsters (with no code of honor), on both sides, is a disgrace to all of our ancestors.

If any of these people killing and loathing each other took time out to look at the historical relationship between Africans and the indigenous people (who would rather ally themselves with their European conquerors), they would redirect their eskewed energies into liberation.

Hans Rosling: Data on Africa

View the first 6 minutes of this alarming video. He charts the progress of people all aroung the world. Notice where Africans are in the big picture. If you are Black but not African born, do not dismiss this information. Our destinies and our progress are inextricably linked. If you want to take your journey into the light further, read The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It was written in the 1800s but it is a look into the imperialist and racist foundation upon which our current social/economic conditions have been constructed.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/13/AR2007071301714.html

compassion

Every semester I learn something from my students. Over the years I've learned to have patience with other people and mostly myself. I've learned how to communicate--not just to be heard to be able to listen and respond affectively. I've learned how to hold my space and the space of the class so that no one or no thing can come in and disrupt our purpose. This term, however, was a doosy. I have arrived at a time in my life when I can offer sincere compassion.

What is compassion? The abbreviated dictionary I have defines it as deep sympathy and even pity. I exercise my right not to agree with that. I define compassion as the ability to recognize another person's struggle or pain and even be able to live, for a moment, in that person's shoes. In addition, it is the ability, once that frame of reference is set, to be able to extend oneself as a solution or respite from struggle or pain.

As one who has had her share of struggle, even suffering, a person in that situation does not need pity. When I am in the midst of my struggle or pain, I want a way out. I want to know that tomorrow is going to bring something better. It has taken years for me to realize that the learning experience is one wrought with struggle, because the nature of growth is to struggle to leave old ways behind to don the new--evolve if you will.
I used to teach with tough love. I was afraid that if I showed any softness that they would not only disrespect me but also run over me. With growth I have learned how to hold my space, set standards (for myself and my students), and still act as a feeling human being.

Growing is sometimes hard work. It has to be done, but it is so much more comforting and beautiful when there is someone there who has the ability to reveal to you what tomorrow can bring--what growth feels like after the pain.

Compassion allows me to be human, but in an elevated form. I can acknowledge the unpleasantness, yet be the catalyst for hope and determination. In an ideal world, there would be much more compassion--for those who hurt, for those who have lost sight of hope, even for those who continue to hope when there is no hope in sight, for those who are lost.

I pray that there is compassion for me.
What do you think?
</params>
